Definitely some of the latest Google devices like Pixel and Pixel XL I guess. Oh, and Note7 but unfortunately it continued to blow off.

Those phones aren't shipping yet as they're just announced 10 days ago. They'll be available very soon but I seriously doubt they will be pixelated as all modern and expensive phones have high display density (PPI) so I wouldn't worry about that.

Generally your best bet are phones with quad HD (2K) displays, of which there are several (Pixel XL, newer Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge/S7/S7 Edge, ZTE Axon 7, Nexus 6P, LG G4, etc). Unfortunately iPhones do not have quad HD displays and are not as ideal as the phones I mentioned for mobile VR, but they aren't terrible. You'll start to notice a LOT of pixelation if you try to use VR with a phone with a 720p display (something like a Blu Vivo 5).

Well, Screen resolution is only of the things that make a good VR experience. There are a couple other things. but for now here are a couple smartphones with not only high resolution displays but also high PPI scores. You can also read a VRheads Article which gives their top smartphones for VR. Ultimately the Google Pixel XL will give you the best experience.

      1. Sony Xperia Z5 Premium - 806
      2. Samsung Galaxy S7 - 577 PPI
      3. HTC 10 - 564 PPI
      4. Blackberry PRIV - 540 PPI

I was doing a search in GSM Arena it got me this 31 Smartphones: Phone Finder results - GSMArena.com

But as you said, it's only one factor, the sensors and also the response time of the screen are very important, another technologies like high brightness are not important because you have the phone in a enclosure (mostly).

Right now the best bet is the S7 with the Gear VR and the Pixel XL with the Daydream.
