I just got a S7 a couple weeks ago and am looking at cheaper options than the vive and rift for now. What makes the Samsung Gear VR good? Has Samsung just done a lot of R&D for their lenses or something? What warrants the extra $80 if I got a cardboard? Thanks!

I think it's the price, but honestly it's not in the same range of features of the Oculus Rift or the VIVE, I'm not sure but I may say it's even not as good as the Sony is or will be.

compared to what? if you compare it to cardboard then lens quality, build quality, low persistence display, an OS optimized for low latency, and a pretty good base hardware capabilities all play major roles in it.

For sure there are 3 tiers of VR, Google Cardboard, GearVR, and then Oculus/Vive. Within each there are a few other variations. GearVR is a good choice IF you have one of those few phones that supports it. It's price is right between 100-200 dollars and sometimes even given away free with the phone. (Samsung has run this promo several times) Besides being able to run all cardboard apps, it can run some of the oculus apps too.

The Oculus based apps available to the Gear VR do take advantage of hardware acceleration to make the experience better than most cardboard apps. That's the reason that I recommend it over pure Cardboard.

IF you happen to have 1 of the 5 or 6 phones that it supports! Not even all Samsung phones work with it! lol I agree though it's a GREAT choice if you got the right phone, which I don't.
