The Sony PlayStation VR could sell an estimated 740,000 units by the end of the year, according to market research company SuperData. The month-old VR headset, which works in conjunction with the PlayStation 4, is set to outsell both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, though it launched half a year later.
The HTC Vive, released April 5, is expected to shift 450,000 units before the end of 2016, while the Oculus Rift, which arrived March 28, is estimated to sell a total of 355,000.
Despite the comparatively strong sales figures, SuperData originally anticipated that the PSVR would sell almost 2.6 million units by the start of 2017, but the research company reduced its estimates based on Sonys supply inconsistencies and a lack of marketing.
Why Sonys VR unit sales may be outpacing the competition could lie partly in its price. Sonys PSVR costs $400 and the PS4 that powers it costs $300, while the Vive ($799) and Rift ($599) when combined with a high-performance PC to run them can cost more than double that.

This was always going to happen. Sony's cost and availability make a big difference, and the number of great games already is significant.

I'm not surprised by this at all. It's the least expensive option and it currently has the best games. You can get the PS VR and a PS4 Pro for roughly the price as the other two options... and that's before buying or upgrading a PC.

I am not terribly surprised; hopefully this will lead to more multi-platform VR games and a strong market base to lure development.

So far Sony just surpasses the 50 millions PS4 consoles sold, and I think I read they sold more PSVR than the ViVE and Rift together, so maybe developers will follow the Ubisoft example of bringing compatibility across all platforms

That is what I am hoping. The market is too small even with the strong sales of the PSVR to focus just on that platform. And with Sony on the standards board as well hopefully that means games will be quite portable across the platforms.

Well also the big push Microsoft is making could make a change in the next few months in order to create something a little bit more unified.
