Back in 2014 when Facebook bought the startup of Kickstarter paying $2 billion it rose doubts and confusion about the success of this project.

But the negative forecasts was wrong and Oculus has succeeded by gaining major popularity among people. During F8 San Francisco conference in April 2016 Zuckerberg represented their Social VR prototype, which now has developed greatly.

During the event In San Jose 2016, Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated his companys latest social VR prototype on stage at Oculus Connect 2016. During this prototype comparing the prototype of F8 event users are able to make calls from virtual world to reality using messenger. Visit various places with friends and what is the most exciting take selfies in virtual world and share them on Facebook wall.

During Oculus Connect Zuckerberg announced about creating a new VR helmet which would be standalone and wouldnt demand complex set up to a computer or even demand a mobile phone to experience virtual world. Facebook is going to improve the whole VR platform on the whole.

On 12th of October, Mike Schroepfer posted on his Facebook profile that in the event Mark Zuckerberg showed the perspectives of the computing, which lets people to visit the places as well as do activities they always wanted to do.

The Social VR team of Facebook is welcoming designers, developers and those who have ambitions to join their team to develop the prototypes demonstrated during the Oculus Connect 2016.

Those who followed the conference have seen the new avatars, video calling opportunity. This demos were only the first steps of Facebook team which are formed by talented designers and engineers as well.

The Facebook team aims to develop VR social interaction rather than gaming platform. They want to create the first significant social interaction platform in VR ecosystem.

Agreed with PK... Granted this is in VR, but others have tried to do this social interaction "world" before (*cough* Second Life *cough* and many, many others). While they appeared to be off to a great start, they lacked staying power and are all but gone now. So, we are really going to have to see how this plays out and what FB can bring to the table that hasn't been tried before (besides VR, of course).

Many, MANY moons ago, before most of you were born, I used to play (and eventually work) at a place called The Sierra Network, and then The Imagination Network. It was invented by Ken Williams of Sierra Online of Kings Quest and Leisure Suit Larry fame. And YES I met Ken. Eventually AT&T and then AOL owned the service. It was an online network, that was more of a playground and social "park" You would sign in and they be presented with a map, you had a visual avatar that could travel to different "lands" on the map all with different types of games. The Clubhouse had adult card and board games, Larry Land was R rated and had adult themed activities with a "bar" and casino type games. Sierraland made you feel like a kid again with board games like checkers, reversi, stratego, AND the Red Baron flight sim. And of course Medieval Land where the RPG was, Yserbius! It was a BLAST and it was really the first social network. The games were always played in at least pairs AND many friendships were formed. The network was known for hooking people up and relationships, meetups, and gatherings were common. Here's an ebook about it....

I'm not a a typical Social Network guy, I don't know why I like to understand how some stuff works, Facebook is one I use less, but with Twitter I found that there is more interaction with random people, I remember I was trying to catch attention from some companies and I did it, MSI is one of my followers, Acronis and some few others, I think a lot of social media networks are not social at all, are massive, but not social.

I think Mark Zuckerberg's team is watching that behavior and trying to change it a little bit, I don't figure out how it's going to work with the lack of enough VR devices on the public, Facebook is a billion users network and I don't think 10% of the users have a VR devices.

But for sure if it's free I will try it

VR is definitely growing its presence and more and more people would have access to it. As far as I know this is a very very early demo of the vision Facebook has in mind. By the time it releases to public, VR would probably (hopefully) be a lot more popular among the mainstream public.

To me, they're just thinking forward. Just a thought, imagine if the owner of WhatsApp brushed off the idea initially just because he thinks that there aren't enough people with moving connectivity for the idea to work?
