Geena Davis, Mae Whitman Star in new Virtual Reality Animation "Dear Angelica"

Oculus premiered 'Dear Angelica' at Sundance

Among the oddball indies and gut-punching dramas on parade at the Sundance Film Festival 2017 this year there was also a number of virtual reality films ready for the spotlight. One of them was Dear Angelica, starring Geena Davis and Mae Whitman.

This video explains a little of the creative process behind the feature animation, which was made with the backing of Facebook's pet VR company Oculus.

The animation uses the immersive power of VR to examine the grief of a daughter, played by The Duff star Whitman, for her lost mother, played by Davis.

I was crying, and so moved by it,” she told Variety about her first experience in VR. “I was just a mess by the end.”

The story was written by Oculus Story Studio creative director Saschka Unseld who spent nearly seven years at Pixar before joining Oculus.

The 12 minute animation is available now for free on the Oculus Store.

Due some local internet problems I haven't watched it, but as soon I do it I will tell, but it looks very promising.

It seems one of the artist in the video is using the Rift with Move Controllers to draw a character for the movie around 0:14.

That's pretty cool. It reminded me of Glen Keane using the HTC Vive to re-create Ariel from The Little Mermaid.

the artwork in this looks so beautiful! I hope more movies take advantage of the VR platform to immerse the viewers and tell powerful stories.
