I want to get my 12 year old a virtual reality headset, what are your recommendations? I want something of good quality but isn't to expensive.

Cardboard is decent andwould be what I'd get for a kid, to see if they really are into it and it's not just a fad. If they are really into it then spend more money on one of better quality. Just my opinion though.

My kids are a bit younger. I bought a Mattel View Master VR for them. It takes a beating.

I swap between my View-Master and one of the actual Cardboard units.

For what I understand the PSVR is suitable and safe for children from 12 years, also if you already have a PS4 can be the cheapest option among the top of the line out there.

Any form of VR is safe for that age if you limit to 30 minutes, according to several pediatric specialists I've consulted with.

I'd say in 2019 you now have better options. The Oculus Go would be great for an intro experience. It's comparatively cheap (starting at $199). If you want something beefy then preorder the Quest for $400.
