Good question. Unity is the current 3D standard for mobile games, with an estimated 50-70% (depending on your source) of all mobile games now being created in Unity. Which is huge.
They've been trying hard to own the VR space. But a lot of old architectural decisions that have been a problem for a long time, have really been slowing down the process. 5.6 is more baby steps towards resolving those issues, and finally they are starting to incorporate their own VR SDKs.
As a middleware engine they should be the ones dictating VR development (as they are the entity between the users, developers and sdks). So seeing them take these steps is crucial as it makes it much much faster to develop VR titles.
It comes with 22? 24? Platforms you can build for. With a well polished and well documented engine. They were iOS designers that created a game engine, so it really does feel fluid for the most part compared to their competitors.
