    Hey James welcome! There is a difference in the experience and in the cost between the GearVR and the HTC Vive. The HTC Vive is a MUCH better experience BUT it costs much more, the unit itself is in the 600-800 range, and you must also have a pretty beefy PC. A VR ready PC runs 1000-2000 with 1500 being a good average cost. Sometimes you can upgrade your current PC with a new video card and it will then work with VR. Ok the GearVR is a good experience BUT not as good as the HTC Vive (or Oculus Rift) BUT it's much cheaper, it's around 100-200 dollars, and sometimes Samsung gives them away with the phone you buy. You must also have a flagship Samsung phone such as a S5, S6, S6+, S6 Edge, S7, etc

    For computer based VR you need a Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. The Samsung GearVR requires a Samsung phone.
