I am a nurse that works with patients that are in catatonic states (almost like a coma). How close are we to using virtual reality to tap into the minds of patients that can't communicate or are in comas?

The VR side is doable but a lot more research will need to happen. The hard part is proving that you are interacting, and displaying the info. I'd give researchers a few years just because it's not much more than a computer screen with a gyroscope.
