Just set up my Daydream VR tonight and am a little curious as to why both NFC and GPS MUST be turned on to get daydream to work. I don't need NFC to launch the daydream app for me, and I'm not moving anywhere, so why the heck is GPS required to be on. Sounds like these are just battery suckers if you ask me. Any way to get around having GPS and NFC on all the time?

NFC is what connects the controller. HOWEVER there is a trick where you turn off NFC and use your Daydream as a cardboard viewer, it works pretty good, BUT you have no button to push to control the screen, BUT many apps do still work. Check out my thread about it in this forum.
