I do think that Apple's non-committal status to mobile VR is hindering it in the short run, but in the long run, it should not be an issue. Apple has a business plan of not releasing products until everyone at the C-level at Apple is happy.
You are not completely missing the boat either. Please don't forget that Cardboard is supported on iOS devices, and the existing YouTube app can take advantage of it.
Another thing is even when it's not designed for iPhone, some Cardboard cases are iPhone compatible and also there is some content for iPhone, unfortunely I can't say you for sure where to find the apps, maybe iTunes can gives you some info about it.
