Hey guys! I started with Gear VR, because I have a Note 5. Got my kid into Cardboard because he has a S6 Active, which doesn't fit in Gear VR. I recommend for newbies to get Cardboard for pics and videos, Altspace to start interacting with people that have HMDs, and stack your chips. PSVR will definitely be games oriented, but with the new specs required for Rift, about 500 bucks worth of mobo, processor, and video card should be all you need (if you have the rest).
Matthew, I would personally go with Vive ( I have one). By the time you factor in the Oculus Touch and extra sensor, you are a few hundred dollars more than Vive. Vive also has Oculus store support for most titles through Revive (
