Absolutely quote. I don't know why if consumer keep pushing they want smaller phone all OEM still produce bigger and bigger devices...
Because a lot of people still do want bigger phones. And if they make two variants, everybody can choose what they like.

Simply because you can't please everyone with a single product, everyone have their preference

I would think that the Pixel XL would be the way to go if you are interested in the best day dream experience, higher PPI doesn't matter until you hold the phone that close to your face. Personally I would go with the regular, I have a nexus 6p now and it's nice but i want to go back to a regular sized phone

Does the Pixel XL fit as nicely in the Daydream VR headset? Is the Daydream VR headset one size fits all phones?
Yes, the headset fits all Daydream qualifying phones (including the Pixel XL). Since the headset communicates via NFC with the phone (so the phone knows how to align the rendered images with the viewports) it will be seamless whether you are using the Pixel or Pixel XL, it's just a matter of how much screen-door effect you have, which can only be solved via higher DPI screens.

Contemplating between Pixel or Pixel XL and taking the Daydream into account. How much do you think the higher PPI will help with the XL? I've used cardboard with a Nexus 5x, which neat, the resolution and the screendoor effect was something that could have been improved upon. Will the apps that utilize Daydream be mindful of the lower PPI of the non-XL? or is the PPI of the XL still not high enough to give much of a difference?

I tried Gear VR with Galaxy S6 whose screen res is 577 ppi. It was so damn pixelated as hell! The Pixel XL's res is 534 ppi. So what hope have we got?
And Pixel regular has even lower ppi. It might be even worse. But I don't know for sure how much worse. Haven't tried one with lower res.

Here's a little info from AC forum:
This early in the technology, every VR headset, including the upcoming ones from Facebook, HTC snd Sony, are going to have what's commonly called a screen door effect. Think of it this way. You're getting 534 PPI resolution on your phone, but due to the way VR creates the image, by splitting it into two, on the VR, you're getting half of that resolution, so only 267 PPI. If virtual reality really takes off, this I believe will be the motivator for Samsung to start making 4K screens.

Regular Pixel in all black for me. Tired of the 6P hogging my pocket. Daydream will be my first foray into VR though and it might awaken a new quest for higher PPI. Very excited to slap this in and give it a go.

Yeah, the screendoor effect will not disappear until screen PPI goes up significantly - but that's a lot of $$ and a lot of electrons to run, so it won't happen unless there is more consumer demand for VR. It's a chicken and egg thing, so if people are into VR they may as well take the plunge now, because if everyone waits until there's a perfect VR phone there definitely will never be one.

I really hope the xl isn't too much better for VR as I'm a fan of smaller phones. Athough I can imagine that the battery size would be significantly better in regards to VR.

I'm heading for XL version. Regular is just too small for me. My dad has 5 inch smartphone and I don't feel like it.

I definitely agree, when using VR on a 1080p device, you'll notice pixels (even if it's a 5" phone like the pixel)

I went to check it out at my local (Warren, MI) Verizon store after work.

All I can say is, Impressive. It was blazingly fast. The fluidness & speed was amazing. And design looks a helluva lot better in person. Its light, but feels good in the hand.

I wasnt expecting to come away as impressed as I was. The branch I was at actually had a 128GB black version in Stock. It was hard not to walk out with it.

I'm going with the XL because I've been using huge phones for a while now. I also anticipate that the picture in the VR will be better, though I think the resolution is actually similar.

If you are more towards a single handed use, then go for Pixel, otherwise if you have extra cash for more battery and a bigger screen, then Pixel XL
