I've never tried VR but I recently purchased a Galaxy S7 Edge. I've been told that the next logical step is to skip cardboard and go straight for the Gear VR.

Should I pick up the previous gen Gear VR at a discount or is there anything about the new Gear VR that would justify getting it instead?

You don't necessarily need the new Gear unless you want USB C support, which would be handy if/when you upgrade phones. The original GearVR is being deeply discounted now so if you see it at a great price and you know you are keeping your phone a while, I say go for it!

There's nothing wrong with starting out with Cardboard. It works great for a ton of different VR experiences, and it a low cost gateway into VR.

Amen to that! Often you can even get them free!

I thinks buying a new gear vr from Craigslist is the best option, there's so many people selling them

Is the experience with a Galaxy S7 Edge good?

I was hoping to get some actual user feedback. I've heard the edge screen can diminish the experience.

Now that the note 7 is dead, there is no use for USB c on the gear vr

The big thing to remember is that USB-C will be coming to the S series next year and the new Gear VR has a wider viewing angle than the white one. It's worth it to get the black one, unless you get a white one for less than 50 USD.

I would go with the micro USB gear vr, works with your s7 edge but the only caveat is its not future proof for your next purchase as USB-C is becoming main stream.

Minecraft is so good in vr, i have both headsets and the second gen one is much more comfortable, especially with glasses on. The dark interior makes leaked in light so much less of an issue and the increased viewing area is noticeably better.

I have Minecraft for Gear VR and Vivecraft for the HTC Vive. Both have really good strengths, and I love to play them both.

With the white version on sale at Amazon, I think I'm going to give that a run.

The whole VR experience is new for me, so I'll test it out on the cheap.

Weight is one of the most important factor when buying a VR gear. There is no doubt you should get a lightweight VR gear.

Gear VR has a strap to stay on your head, cardboard does not.

I was going to pick one up but couldn't think of any real use cases... I totally forgot Minecraft... I can see my 4 year old enjoying watchful me flail around the living room trying to avoid him getting me in our battles.

I have a narrow head and find the 2nd gen Gear VR to fit much better (way less light bleed on the edges). Worth going for that one IMO - plus it's future proofed with the USB-C option.
