2,241 there are 3 tiers, ultra cheap, Google Cardboard (and compatibles) free and up to around 30 dollars. Next GearVR and a few like it which cost around 100 tom150. Then finally the good stuff Oculus Rift and HTC Vive 500-1000 and require a good PC. The first 2 work with your smart phone. GearVR requires Samsung.

3 it all depends on what you want to do with VR...if you want the basic exp then Cardboard / Gear VR should suffice, else Oculus / Vive are the way to go.
