A good quality Google Cardboard is around 20$. I purchased my own Google Cardboard for around 3$. The quality is really limited by your screen quality. I have seen various brands sell plastic versions for 100$+

Sturdy is subjective. I purchased a 3$ Google Cardboard kit from one of those chinese wholesaler websites. It is made out of cardboard and it is good. The only issue is if you wanted to put it in a suitcase or a bag it will get bent unless you flatten it.

Do it! They're not bad at all. Certain phones will do better than others because screen quality matters a lot more up close. But you can start with a cheap (actual) cardboard headset from Amazon first to see what you think, then if you like it, you can invest in a better (plastic) headset. A more comfortable design and head straps make a huge difference. Also, pro-tip you'll most likely need some kind of controller that is able to tell your phone to click, since the headsets with magnetic buttons tend not to be very reliable, so what I did is just pair my old Bluetooth mouse with my phone, then I was golden.

It really depends. You can get a decent one made of cardboard for $10, but there are plastic ones out there that are more expensive, not to mention ones built with NFC in mind. It all depends on what you're looking for. To be honest, Gear VR is nothing but a very fancy Cardboard set. Same basic principle.

Maybe the cardboard is a good option b before spending money on a bigger more expensive unit. You know, get the feel of how a vr unit works. To see if you will use it, or if it is a fad.

My question is how much of a drop off is it from Samsung vr to cardboard, my wife really liked the Samsung vr she tried at an event but we don't have a phone that will run it, hence debating getting her a Google cardboard to try for now.
