I have a view master VR and I have tried with a LG G3 and a Nexus 6P (which barely fits) and my phones are just overheating. I'm worried I'm causing some irreversible damage to the battery and internals.

Are there some mods to keep my phone cool in a VR headset?

There's an app called cool master you might try, also some people use those headache gel packs.

Well, the LG G3 is just under powered to do any real VR and the Nexus 6P has a SD810 that is known to get hot and throttle just staring at it. I would suggest a phone with a SD820 chipset which has better thermal management.

That is a great question. I am not sure how to keep it cool. I have tried an Oculus and a do not put the cover on and seems to help; however, this is not something that can be done with the VM becuase of how the phone is attached. I guess I will try the app someone suggested above.

VR is a very CPU intensive task and its very difficult to keep it cool.

This is why to never use Note 7 on VR headset!

I was hoping to use the 6p for daydream, but I'm seeing on the android developers site, that performance will reduce due to the device getting to warm. Is there a headset that actually has some sort of cooling built in? Like a fan or something?

The Snapdragon 810 is basically a cooker so I don't see how using those devices will lend to a VR experience that would last much longer than a few minutes.

This post is actually making me reconsider getting a VR set for my 6P..

i never thought about that but it's a good question. it may very well cause damage to the phone with excessive use. let's see what people say...

You can use it in front of an AC vent. I did this when my s820 device overheated, albeit not due to VR.

Maybe if you blow a fan in front of your face while using it but if I had to do that I wouldn't do it.

Unfortunately what's really needed are the newer generation of phones - that's why Google has the "Daydream" compatibility requirements.

If you look at several 3D printing sites, many have made fan/battery combos that you can make. I'm working on trying to make one myself.

You can use apps like street view which doesn't use a lot of resources

You could try creating some kind of ultra power saving mode with tasker to disable anything you don't need when using vr (for example Bluetooth, Wi-Fi,...) and set the governor to a less resource needy one like conservative

Unfortunately, as other have mentioned. VR is a very intensive 'application' for your smartphone so naturally the phone tends to get hot. There does seem to be some light at the end of the tunnel and i have heard good reports about the Snapdragon 835. Should help a little with heat

Could it cause damage toy your smartphone or battery? Potentially.
Batteries do have 'operating temperatures' that are mentioned in the smartphone manuals. So going outside of those zones is not recommend but could be fine. What i normally do, is get an ice pack gel like pkcable mentioned and cool the phone down a little before i begin. After about 15 minutes i check the phone to see how things are going and if it feels to hot i stop.

    Hope this helps a little.
