I mean, the way I understand it Oculus has 2 things that smartphone HMDs lack: PC connectivity and headtracking. So, why not just put a headtracking device in the HMD, and connect the whole thing to the PC via USB Type C, and have a comlete Oculus-grade experience? Why has this not happened already?

Hi! Welcome to VRHeads. Gear VR and Daydream View both have pretty decent head tracking right now; enough so that you can use your head to aim and point. Many Oculus experiences are available for both Rift and Gear. Connecting a Gear VR to a PC via USB-C would remove any mobility you're hoping for, and most of the Samsung phones that work with Gear VR don't use USB-C. Pixel, however, does use USB-C.

Thanks for the reply Cale. Everywhere I see people saying galaxy cannot headtrack the way Oculus does, as it wont follow tilting head and small body movements, like leaning slightly. Did that change now?

The tracking on the phone is done from the inside out rather than with an external sensor (like the Rift). You can tilt your head and look around with a Gear VR, but it won't follow your movements around an entire room (like the Vive).
