Be the pioneer! Be sure to put a GoPro filming the other passengers reactions :)
I would be fine with it
I wouldn't have a problem with using it, but I do have a problem with drift while in motion. I tried using my Gear VR on a ride on the glorious Golden Zephyr from Lincoln, Nebraska to Salt Lake City. Every little turn of the train, reorient. Planes probably won't be as bad, but I wouldn't have an issue seeing people use it with headphones.
I'm not concerned with looking weird, but there aren't a lot of apps that play nice with external motion from vehicles. Mostly what you see are video playback apps, which can be nice.
I don't think it's too dorky to use it on plane. As long as you don't disturb people, I'm sure they won't care.
Make sure you've got enough space to turn your head, wave your remote, and use headphone or earbuds.
But I've never tried though. So I'm curious too. Please tell us the experience if you ever try it on a plane.
I think that these days there is a certain awareness to VR, so it might not look as weird like using the Rift DK1 a few years ago. And people learn to accept new technology, and I'll guess they'll probably just think "wow, this looks cool!"
