using external hdd on pc and ps4?

trying to use external hdd on pc to download onto but have to format, then try to use same hdd on ps4 an have to format again, removing content on hdd. is there away round this? basically trying to put stuff! on hdd via pc then use it on psvr. tia

@pkcable Unfortunately, this depends on what the OP is trying to do.

If it is just watching videos or music, format the drive as NTFS or FAT32 and it will work. If the OP is trying to install PS games, then it has to be formatted into its own filesystem. The Xbox has the same restrictions.

Both systems will ask if this will be removable for media or to extend the internal game storage (Xbox: Do you want to format this drive? Yes-game storage No-it acts like a USB thumbdrive)

I don't see a way, expect maybe try portable media? Does the PS4 have an SD slot, or some place for portable media? USB port? Might face the same issue though, as the PS4 probably uses an OS based on Linux, or totally original, BUT certainly NOT Windows (or Mac OS). I see this working MUCH better PC to Xbox, which is essentially a computer.
