[VR Question]

My dissertation involves heavy use of VR to simulate tissue incision. The majority of the function will be focussing on the model close up and probably won't involve a huge amount of movement around a room. However, it will also have a secondary use for gaming, most likely racing based but this may change. Which headset would better suit my needs? I'm not particularly worried about price as I'm willing to spend to ensure i have the best possible equipment for my work.

i think you would be fine with either. Many folks prefer the HTC Vive.
