I'm just wondering which to buy. The stores are selling them quite close in price now (Oculus Rift = £400, HTC Vive = £500).
I've watched and read about comparisons and I'm not sure what to buy. Here's a description of my setup:
- Small room, plenty of elbow room but limited to chair + desk.
- Gaming PC but with generic specs i.e. GTX 970, i7 core, 16gm DDR4 RAM, enough ports for both headsets.
Reasons for Oculus right now:
- I heard Oculus has drivers/SDKs to support any differences in performance if the PC power isn't always cutting it.
- Lighter and more comfortable for longer sessions.
- Cheaper by £100.
Reasons not to get Oculus:
- A big nose gap which I heard others have reported sometimes gives in to light.
- Might need a 3rd camera for more accurate motion.
- Facebook owns it so privacy concerns.
- Locked to Oculus store.
Reasons for Vive right now:
- Cheaper than it was months ago.
- Better immersion apparently, and better tracking.
- Not enclosed to a store such as Oculus, has more open support apparently.
Reasons not to get Vive:
- More expensive for possibly very similar experience to Oculus.
- Heavier by 100-ish grams, may cause more strain.
- May need more room to properly operate (not sure if this is a feature or requirement).
- May need more PC power.
This is all I could think of. I'm fine with buying either but just wondering if you have any advice as users or from your experience/point-of-view.
Thank you!
